The Number Is Not the Answer
Every parent researching a new neighborhood eventually ends up on a school rating website, staring at a number between 1 and 10, trying to decide if a 7 is good enough or if they need to find a neighborhood with a 9.
This is understandable. It's also mostly useless.
School rating algorithms weight heavily on standardized test scores, which correlate strongly with socioeconomic status and not particularly strongly with the quality of a child's actual education experience. A school serving a wealthy neighborhood will almost always outscore a school serving a lower-income one, regardless of which school has better teachers, more creative programming, or a more supportive community.
What Actually Predicts a Good School Experience
The research on this is fairly consistent. What matters most:
Teacher retention. A school where teachers stay for ten, fifteen, twenty years is a school where the culture is good, the administration is functional, and the community trusts the institution. Ask the principal directly: what is your average teacher tenure? A good school knows this number and is proud of it.
Extracurricular depth. Does the school have a robust set of offerings beyond the core curriculum? Art, music, theater, sports, clubs, maker spaces, language immersion? These programs signal investment and community engagement. They're also where kids often find the peers who become their people.
Parent engagement. A school with an active, well-funded PTA or parent organization can supplement state funding for programs and staff that wouldn't otherwise exist. In many competitive urban markets, the parent community is effectively a second budget.
How the principal answers hard questions. Visit. Schedule a tour. Ask about the school's approach to reading instruction, about how they handle kids who are ahead or behind grade level, about discipline philosophy. The quality and specificity of the answers tell you a great deal about the culture of the institution.
The Visits Are Not Optional
You cannot do this research entirely online. You need to walk through the building during the school day, see how kids move through the hallways, hear the noise level in classrooms, notice whether the environment feels orderly or chaotic or joyful or some combination of all three.
Talk to parents in the neighborhood — at the playground, at the coffee shop — not just the ones the school office connects you with. Ask what they love. Ask what they'd change.
The District Boundary Calculation
In high-demand areas, the difference between a top-rated and mid-rated school district can add $100,000 or more to home prices within the boundary. This is a real financial calculation families make.
But it's worth stress-testing. Are you paying the premium for a school that genuinely fits your child, or for a number that you've been told matters? Sometimes the answer is yes — the school is exceptional and the investment is real. Sometimes you'd pay less, be in a more interesting neighborhood, and your child would get an equivalent or better education at a school with a lower rating.
